Electricity costs in Kestrel Hawk Barn

How much electricity will I use?

A question we are often asked, but obviously impossible to answer as it depends on:

  • Whether you are using the heaters and to what temperature you are heating the cottage.
  • What the outside air temperature is.
  • Whether you are cooking/eating in or eating out.
  • Whether you are using the washing machine and dryer.
  • How many baths/showers you are having.

However, what we are able to tell you is how much other guests have spent on electricity, the maximum, minimum and average. The following table shows this in pounds per day over the last 12 months.

Period Maximum Minimum Average
May - September 1.71 0.14 0.85
October - April 5.29 0.86 2.87
All Year Round 5.29 0.14 1.64

Why don't you just increase the rental and include the electricity?

We did include electricity usage intitially and then saw how the cottage usage compared to our own and realised that:

  • When there is no additional charge for something it is considered free and wasted.
  • Charging a lower rental and charging seperately for electricity used is fairer to our guests.
  • This helps us to reduce the impact of our business on the environment and the cost of your holidays.

Aren't you making a profit on the electricity?

No we are not, and we are not allowed to by law. If fact we make a loss on the supply of the electricity as we undercharge for each unit and we also put money in the meter before you arrive.
